Rare Interview: Rei Kawakubo

The unbending, unapologetic newness seeker, Ms. Kawakubo answered questions for WWD and everyone of them is a gem. “I think the media has some responsibility to bear for people becoming more conservative. Many parts of the media have created the situation where uninteresting fashion can thrive.” Are you listening, Anna?

She continues on that theme when WWD asks her if she feels fashion today has become too much about big business. “Yes, it’s true.…And it’s weakening the power of creation. This is the worst of situations.” Are you still there, Anna?

On her desire to create clothes that have never existed: “As the weight of experience piles up, it has become increasingly difficult to find yet new ways of thinking and to make new things.” See, I told you all of them were gems.

Of course, I’m not her only admirer. She has near universal praise from her contemporaries. Karl Lagerfeld loved her now infamous Fall 2012 collection saying, “It was really new and different.” Marc Jacobs is famous for wearing COMME des GARÇONS, especially the men’s dresses. “It’s not about dressing for other people. It’s not buying clothes to attract or seduce. It feels like a gift you give yourself,” he says.
